Excel Institute was established in 1995 as a private non-profit corporation designed to serve the mentally and educationally challenged. Since its inception, Excel has been committed to meeting the educational need of special populations, in both residential group homes and the general public, desiring to experience academic success in their educational endeavors. Certified educators work to design each student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) to ensure maximum learning experiences and offer a variety of instructional, functional and vocational opportunities for each student to achieve desired outcomes. Excel offers Carnegie hours in English/Language Arts, Reading, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Life Skills. These six courses, providing Carnegie hours, allow our students to work toward their Alabama Occupational Diploma. Electives, such as music, art, photography, and physical education round out the total educational experience offered at Excel Institute. Extracurricular programs offered at Excel are student newspaper, school yearbook, debate team, basketball team, cheerleading squad, glee club and student government (student council). It is the combination of academic curriculum and extracurricular and community services that define the uniqueness of Excel Institute and gives our students that The Winning Edge!
